AICHO had a site visit with Renee Goldtooth, member of the Navajo Nation and the Evaluation Specialist for the Notah Begay III (NB3) Foundation, in late July. It was a great meeting about the grant we received from them to lead a community food sovereignty initiative through expansion of our urban gardens and begin the development of social impact businesses that feature Indigenous foods! We are looking forward to continuing this good work. Miigwech to Marisa Ring, LeAnn Littlewolf and Katie Schmitz for helping to cater the lunch with Indigenous foods, teas and mint leaves in water, and the rest of the AICHO staff who helped get ready for today’s meeting.

Project Naptural recently wrapped up their 2nd annual Natural Hair Symposium, art exhibit, and hair show in the Dr. Robert Powless Intercultural Center. Project Naptural is an educational, grant supported, academic design research and cultural study about the social implications of natural hair and its effects on Black female-identified folks. The 2018 Natural Hair Symposium included natural hair art with events coinciding to help educate and empower the natural hair community. At the symposium, there were hair shows, guest speakers and stylists, hair models (youth and adult), presentations on the historical context of natural hair, and product/styling demos.
For more information on Project Naptural, visit their website or check out their Facebook page. The workshop allowed the kids to take the photos and write reflections focused on Indigenous culture, foods, water, and experiences. Keep an eye out for their upcoming exhibit at Gimaajii
