Time: 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Location: Dr. Robert Powless Cultural Center Ojibwe authors Marcie Rendon and Denise Sweet are coming together for the next installment of the Indigenous Writer Series, to be hosted by the American Indian Community Housing Organization (AICHO). In this event, the authors will talk about their careers and books, read an excerpt from their books, participate in a Q&A session, and sign books. The event is set to take place on August 24, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Dr. Robert Powless Cultural Center, 212 W 2nd Street Duluth, MN. The Indigenous Writer Series is intended to highlight and celebrate Indigenous local and regional authors and provide an environment for our community to come and learn from them.
Rendon is the author of the Cash Blackbear crime novels set in northern Minnesota. She is a poet, playwright, children’s book author, and performance artist. She is an enrolled citizen of the White Earth Ojibwe nation and is listed in Oprah’s 2020 list of 31 Native American authors to read. “Sinister Graves” is the latest installment of the Cash Blackbear novels. The mystery novel is set in 1970s Minnesota on the White Earth Reservation and follows the young Ojibwe woman Cash Blackbear as she attempts to discover the truth about the disappearance of Native women and their newborns. Sweet is author of “Palominos Near Tuba City,” a selection of Sweet's new and previously published poems from her long and distinguished career as a poet. In 2004, Sweet was appointed as Wisconsin’s Poet Laureate, the second laureate named for the state. She currently serves as Poet Laureate for the city of Bayfield, Wisconsin. She is a White Earth Ojibwe tribal member. Sweet has published three other poetry books including “Know By Heart,” “Songs for Discharming,” and “Days of Obsidian, Days of Grace.” She also co-authored “Nitaawichige.” |

AICHO is excited to host our first ever Indigenous Writer Series. These free and open to the community sessions will span over 13 months. Mark your calendars and join us as we celebrate, lift up, and showcase local and regional Indigenous writers. Events will include writer presentations, book readings, Q & A from the audience, book signings, and refreshments. All events will be in-person at AICHO’s Dr. Robert Powless Cultural Center at 212 W. 2nd St in Duluth, MN except for Dr. Michael Sullivan’s which is via Zoom. We are grateful to the McKnight Foundation for sponsoring this series and for their ongoing support.
