Peggy Flanagan for Lieutenant Governor stopped by AICHO before the "One Minnesota Listening Tour-Duluth" event. AICHO, Mending the Sacred Hoop, and Leech Lake Tribal Office staff along with Fond du Lac tribal member/artist Vern Northrup got to visit with her and talk briefly about issues. It was nice to be able to share with her about AICHO's programs, initiatives and progress. The meeting was brief but she promised to stop back for longer session.
Photos by Ivy Vainio *AICHO is a nonpartisan organization AICHO staff members Katie Schmitz and Ivy Vainio brought seven Gimaajii Youth to Dream of Wild Health on Aug. 22. We started with a smudge ceremony and talking circle, then went on a tour of the farm and gardens, then the youth had a painting session, and Katie and Ivy met with Ernie Whiteman and Diane Wilson, and then they treated us to Indigenous refreshments.
Hope Flanagan taught us about plants that are used as medicines (ones to help set bones) and Ernie told us they use at least 900 year old tobacco seeds for their gardens. Kids got to shuck hazelnuts and try all kinds of berries along the tour. We are so thankful for being able to spend the day there to learn and experience this amazing farm. Miigwech Diane, Ernie, Hope, Miisko, Shane and the employees who had a part in making this day happen for us. Miigwech to major funder Notah Begay III (NB3) Foundation with additional funding by Center for Prevention Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Minnesota. Panelists Ricky Defoe, Lyz Jaakola, Niib Aubid and Joseph Bauerkemper drew quite the crowd for AICHO's Treaty Rights, Climate Change, and Decolonization forum which took place on Aug. 15. Over 200 community members attended, leaving standing room only for the event. Minnesota Native News was in attendance, along with partners Minnesota Interfaith Power & Light, the University of Minnesota-Duluth, and TakeAction MN.
The forum tackled questions such as: What are treaty rights? What role do treaty rights play in resource extraction, resilience, and relationships between Native and non-Native people? How can understanding our identities as treaty people improve our relationships with one another and with the land? Miigwech to all who came to learn that we are all treaty people! Photos by Ivy Vainio AICHO hosted their 2nd Niij Bingo Night for our housing residents and their families. It was an amazing time, and so much fun for everyone.
Miigwech to LeAnn Littlewolf for organizing this event! Miigwech to AICHO staff Shannon, Rose, Katie, Ivy, Scott, Cheryl, Jon and Michelle for helping out. Miigwech to Ricky Defoe for greeting everyone at the beginning. Chi miigwech to Jonathan Thunder and Tashia Hart AND 10 year old Patience for working the Bingo Calling table. Every youth received a bag filled with school supplies at the end of the event. We think everyone received at least one prize. Miigwech to Markey Dwyer for the great quilt that she made for the event. Photos by Ivy Vainio Artists Ellen Sandbeck and Moira Villiard presented their exhibit "Endangered" on Friday, Aug. 10 in the Dr. Robert Powless Cultural Center.
In this exhibit, paper-cut artist Ellen Sandbeck and painter Moira Villiard explored human impact on the environment through two lenses. On one side of the exhibit, endangered species lined the wall in the form of intricate paper-cut images illuminating a broad spectrum of vulnerable biodiversity. On the other side, illustrations depicted the history of wild ricing and what’s at stake in the face of sulfide mining. The art exhibit was on display through Aug. 31. Photos by Ivy Vainio A Good Food Access Advocacy Class was held here at AICHO on Aug. 28 and 29 from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. The event was open to anyone interested in learning how to advocate for good food policies, and many of our residents participated.
This is one way AICHO is building our food sovereignty work, as we advocate for greater resources and access to healthy food |
